Drowsy driving: How to know you are too tired to drive

On Behalf of Law Office of Richard J. Presutti, P.C. | Jul 23, 2024 | Car Accidents

Car accidents caused by drowsy driving can devastate lives in an instant. If you have suffered painful injuries due to someone else’s exhaustion behind the wheel, you know the frustration all too well.

This post will shed light on the telltale signs that a driver is too tired to operate a vehicle safely. Understanding these indicators can help prevent future accidents and may help inform your case if you are considering legal action.

Signs of driver fatigue

Frequent yawning or struggling to keep your eyes open are often the first signs of fatigue setting in. If you find yourself dozing behind the wheel, it’s a clear indication that you are too tired to be driving.

Another alarming sign is realizing you cannot remember driving the last few miles. This “highway hypnosis” can be extremely dangerous. Missing visible road signs or turns you normally wouldn’t overlook also suggests your attention is wavering.

If you are having difficulty maintaining a consistent speed, it may be a sign that your driving abilities are impaired by fatigue. Drifting out of your lane is also an indicator of exhaustion.

Prioritizing sleep and taking short breaks throughout the day may help combat exhaustion. If you feel tired, bring a friend with you who can take over the wheel so you do not have to drive.

Staying alert on busy Texas roads

Staying alert behind the wheel can make the difference between life and death on Texas roads. By recognizing the signs of fatigue in yourself and other drivers, you can take action to prevent tragic accidents. Remember, pulling over for a quick nap or switching drivers could save not just your life but the lives of others sharing the road with you.
