Tragedy illustrates the importance of motorcycle awareness

A tragic story about the deaths of seven motorcyclists in another state recently made national news. In addition to the seven motorcyclists who died, two other people suffered significant injuries.

The accident happened in the dinner hours on a rural stretch of a federal highway in another state. Police say that the driver of a pickup truck apparently slammed in to a group of motorcyclists who were riding together, possibly on the shoulder of the road.

The driver apparently struck several of the bikes before going off the road and into the nearby woods. While the driver of the pickup survived, it appeared from photographs that his truck caught on fire after the accident. There was also bike wreckage all along the highway.

Police say that they are still investigating the cause of the accident, which some have described as one of the worst of its kind, at least in the region. The victims were part of a group of former and active Marines who enjoyed riding their motorcycles with each other.

Especially with the warmer weather, it is no surprise that there are a lot of people in the Houston area who love riding motorcycles. Many Texans may also belong to perfectly legitimate groups of people who like to ride together.

Drivers of other vehicles need to make certain that they are on the lookout for motorcyclists, including groups of motorcyclists, with whom they are sharing the road.

A driver who is not paying attention, is fatigued or drunk, or who just does not fully appreciate the difference between motorcycles and cars can cause serious accidents, including accidents that involve a fatality, a spinal cord injury or an amputation. The driver's victims would be entitled to receive compensation under such circumstances.
